Madonna Booed At Paris Concert Because Of Swastikas

Madonna Booed At Paris Concert Because Of Swastikas

Madonna Booed
Another day, another Madonna controversy. At a small club show in Paris last week, the pop superstar was booed mercilessly by fans who shouted for refunds after the brief, 45-minute set. Now, however, it appears the unrest wasn't the result of the show's length. According to TMZ, a small group of concertgoers started the trouble in response to Madonna's treatment of French politician Marine Le Pen.
As you may have heard, Madonna has caused quite a stir during her MDNA tour by showing a photo of the French National Front leader with a swastika superimposed on her face.
Per TMZ, the irate audience members who started the trouble at the Olympia club "were overheard yelling about Marine Le Pen."
Following the show, Madonna's public relations team released the following statement:
Madonna's Paris club show was planned as her heartfelt thank you to France which she expressed at the start of her show. Despite a grueling concert tour, she desperately wanted to perform for her fans in an intimate setting at the historic Olympia as a means to honor her love for French artists, French cinema and a tribute to France's long history of welcoming and inspiring artists, authors, painters, poets and minorities from other countries over the years. The show was not billed as her full MDNA concert and tremendous effort was made to keep the ticket prices reasonable ($100 for 2000 floor seats) and keep them strictly for her fans. The show cost Madonna close to a million dollars to produce. She has done a handful of club dates in the past and they were never more than 45 minutes. And by the way, she put on a fabulous show which was streamed for millions of fans around the world.

LAGOS, Nigeria — A recent demolition effort in a teeming, floating slum in Nigeria's largest city has some activists fearing the government may try to entirely destroy an area that is home to about 100,000 people.
The Makoko slum rises out of the murky lagoon water separating mainland Nigeria from Lagos' islands. A government-led eviction last week that saw men in speedboats destroy homes with machetes there left about 3,000 people homeless.
Some say the government's warnings about the demolition make it sound like the state wants to entirely destroy the area. But those in Makoko have created their own life independent from the state, with its own schools and clinics, however ill-equipped.

Brandi Odom, 9-Year-Old Alabama Girl, Drowns Rescuing Brother At Pond July 26, 2012 11:34:25 The family of 9-year-old Brandi Odom is hailing her as a hero after she bravely saved her younger brother from drowning at Alabama's Bear Creek pond on Sunday. Following the rescue, Brandi lost her footing, slipped into deep water and drowned, ABC News reports. The chief of the Bear Creek Fire Department, Robert Taylor, says Brandi was swimming with her brothers, ages 7 and 6, late Sunday afternoon when the older boy got into deep water. She went out and pulled her brother by the arm to safety, but then she became trapped and went under, according to ABC. According to Taylor, Brandi's grandmother performed CPR on the girl until rescue workers arrived. Paramedics later rushed her to Lakeland Community Hospital in Haleyville, where she was pronounced dead. “This is a tragedy but she gave her life to save her little brother. She is a hero,” Taylor told the North Jefferson News . But Brandi’s mother, Paula, said the children weren’t even supposed to be in the pond, which is located behind their grandparents’ house. “They were supposed to be waiting for their grandmother before they went in, but they didn’t,” Paula said in an interview with the North Jefferson News. Brandi was a student at Gardendale Elementary School, according to an obituary on the Dignity Memorial website, the funeral home where she will be memorialized on Friday. She was slated to enter the fourth grade next month.

ACCRA, July 24 (Reuters) - Ghana's President John Atta Mills has died unexpectedly, a presidential statement said, and an aide said his death occurred on Tuesday after he took ill on Monday night.
The death of the president of the world's No. 2 cocoa grower comes months before Mills was due to stand for re-election at the helm of the West African country that posted double-digit growth in 2011 and has been praised for its strong democracy in a turbulent region.
"It is with a heavy heart...that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana," a statement sent to Reuters by the president's office said.
It said that Mills, 68, died a few hours after being taken ill but no further details were given.
A presidential aide, who asked not to be named, said the president had complained of pains on Monday evening and died early on Tuesday afternoon when his condition worsened.

Jennifer Lopez Wardrobe Malfunction: The Singer Steps Out In See-Through Top (PHOTOS)

Jennifer Lopez has been all about taking fashion risks these days, braving plunging necklines, sheer catsuits and the strangely ubiquitous drop-crotch pant. But now it seems that her risky dressing habits have seeped into her street wear.
While taking a leisurely stroll with boyfriend Casper Smart in New York City yesterday, the singer (and recent "American Idol" dropout) took down the glam factor a few notches in a t-shirt, white jeans and flip flops. J.Lo must have been pretty relaxed -- she failed to notice that the cotton mesh top she was wearing was completely see-through.
The sheerness of the shirt may not have been as obvious had Jennifer worn her long curls down instead of tying her hair up in a patterned scarf. But we probably shouldn't be surprised since the 42-year-old has quite a history of being sartorially fearless (Jennifer's plunging green 2000 Grammy dress should ring a few bells). So we're guessing that sheer tops, head scarfs and oversized hoop earrings are just par for the course in the daily life of a style risk-taker.
What do you think of Jennifer's sheer look? Check out the photos and tell us what you think.

George Dennehy, 18-Year-Old Guitarist Born Without Arms, Plays With Feet

George Dennehy
George Dennehy was born without arms, but he plays guitar like a pro. How? The 18-year-old from Ashland, Virginia uses his feet. Last month, Dennehy uploaded his performance of "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls to YouTube. The performance was recorded during the Ashland Strawberry Faire; Dennehy is a 2012 Strawberry Faire Scholarship recipient. The video collected only a small number of views, until Dennehy posted the link on Reddit and it shot to the front page of the site in less than 24 hours.
Dennehy also created an "I Am A" page on Reddit, a thread for users to ask questions and read answers. The Virginia teen told Reddit that he eats, types and washes his hair with his feet, and he says he's primarily right-footed.
He also said, "I want it [music] to be my career. I have the opportunity to speak/play at different events or churches, you name it! I'm hoping big things will happen."
Dennehy isn't the only teen who hasn't let physical challenges stop him from achieving his dreams. Fourteen-year-old athlete Coleman Shannon, whose right arm ends at his elbow, recently pitched a no-hitter against his neighboring Little League team. And in 2010, armless piano player Liu Wei became a hit on "China's Got Talent" and achieved Internet fame.
Are you impressed by Dennehy's performance? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

Opening Ceremony Spoilers: London 2012 Olympics Kickoff Will Be Spectacular But Not Secret

Opening Ceremony Spoilers: London 2012 Olympics Kickoff Will Be Spectacular But Not Secret

Openingceremony
Great Britain supporters waving their flags ahead of their Olympic Men's friendly soccer match between Great Britain and Brazil at the Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough, England, Friday, July. 20, 2012.
LONDON -- The London Olympics opening ceremony will be a grand spectacle – but will it be a surprise?
In a word, no.
Director Danny Boyle wants the details to stay secret and games chief Sebastian Coe has pleaded for insiders to stop leaking details of the extravaganza. But in the age of camera phones and social media, with 10,000 performers in the ceremony, thousands of Olympic security and staff and more than 10,000 journalists already at the Olympic Park, not much can be kept out of the public domain.
"Part of the modern world means you can't really do that," Boyle acknowledged about keeping secrets as he showed journalists a mock-up of the set for the opening scene of the ceremony, weeks before the event.
So, a spoiler alert: Stop reading now if you want Friday's opening ceremony to be a surprise. Stop, stop, stop.
But if you are as irresistibly curious as the rest of us, well, prepare for everything from James Bond to Lord Voldemort to a spoonful of sugar.
Boyle has revealed only selected details about the show, But since the performers started rehearsals in June at the Olympic Stadium – and an army of journalists started arriving to cover the July 27-Aug. 12 games – a trickle of details about the 27 million pound ($42 million) opening ceremony has become a torrent.
The leaks became too much for Coe, who tweeted: "Share the frustration of volunteer performers and the public at Opening Ceremony being unofficially trailed. Let's (hash)savethesurprise."
His imploring hashtag fell on deaf ears. Still more information emerged.
So what do we know?
The ceremony's theme is "Isles of Wonder," inspired by William Shakespeare's play about shipwrecked castaways, "The Tempest." An actor is due to recite Caliban's speech, the one that runs "Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises." Mark Rylance, who had been due to perform the lines, pulled out after the death of his stepdaughter. Kenneth Branagh is rumored to be his replacement.
Despite Boyle's enchanted-island inspiration, few expect the man who depicted Scottish heroin addicts in "Trainspotting" and Indian slum dwellers in "Slumdog Millionaire" to deliver a sanitized image of Britain.
It sounds more like Isles of Wonder and Woe – with a big dash of British whimsy thrown in.
Boyle has said the show is "trying to show the best of us, but we're also trying to show many, many different things about our country."
The ceremony will open at 9 p.m. with the sound of a 27-ton bell – the largest harmonically tuned bell in the world – forged at London's 442-year-old Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which made London's Big Ben and Philadelphia's Liberty Bell.
A prerecorded segment has been filmed inside Buckingham Palace, reportedly involving Queen Elizabeth II and Daniel Craig as secret agent James Bond. If rumor is to be believed, a stuntman dressed as 007 will parachute into the stadium to start the show.
The opening sequence will evoke a pastoral idyll, the "green and pleasant land" described in William Blake's poem "Jerusalem," which has been set to music and is regarded as England's unofficial national anthem. There's a meadow, livestock, a farmer plowing his field, a cricket match – and, in a nod to Britain's plethora of rural summer music festivals, a mosh pit.
Boyle hasn't disclosed what comes next, but has said the ceremony will depict Britain's past, present and future for a global television audience estimated at 1 billion. In addition to the athletes and performers, some 60,000 spectators will be in the stadium, including political leaders from around the world. U.S. first lady Michelle Obama and her daughters and a sprinkling of European and celebrity royalty will be among those attending.
Aerial photographs of the set for the second section of the show depict dark buildings and smokestacks with the River Thames running through it. This is the other side of the country described in "Jerusalem" – a land of "dark satanic mills."
A third act will tackle the regeneration of east London, where the Olympics are taking place, as parkland and a creative heartland, home to many artists, designers and Internet startups.
There will be vignettes drawing on British history – Boyle's people-power version of it – including Depression-era jobless protesters and nurses performing a tribute to the National Health Service, founded in 1948 to provide free health care for all Britons and now a much fought-over national institution.
Performers dressed as miners and factory workers have also been seen going into the stadium, and one set piece is a model of the Empire Windrush, a ship that brought hundreds of Caribbean migrants to Britain in 1948.
According to the Sunday Times, one section will feature characters from children's fiction classics including "Alice in Wonderland" and "Peter Pan" – and a showdown between Voldemort, the villain of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books, and a horde of flying magical nannies based on Mary Poppins.
Boyle has stressed that the ceremony is not a concert – "the real stars are the athletes" – but music will play a key role, with musical direction by electronic duo Underworld, who have worked with Boyle since his 1996 movie "Trainspotting."
Music heard coming from the stadium in recent days ranges from "Jerusalem" – of course – to songs by The Beatles, The Who, the Sex Pistols, and Vangelis' theme from "Chariots of Fire."
There are also songs by newer acts, including Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah, two homegrown stars forged in the gritty London environment that Boyle is celebrating.
The final act will be former Beatle Paul McCartney – due to lead the audience in a sing-along of "Hey Jude," with thousands of voices urging "take a sad song and make it better."
Final touches are still being put on the show, with a technical rehearsal scheduled for Monday evening and a final dress rehearsal on Wednesday. Boyle has already cut a stunt bike sequence to try to keep the show to its allotted three-hour running time so everyone can use public transport to get home.
Boyle's spectacle is only part of the Summer Games opening ceremony, much of which is dictated by Olympic protocol.
There also will be a parade of athletes from the more than 200 participating nations, speeches by dignitaries – including the queen, who will officially declare the games open – and of course the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.
The identity of the torchbearer who will ignite the cauldron it is the most closely guarded secret of all – and so far, that has not leaked.
