THE
former Chairman of South-South Parliamentary Caucus in the Federal
House of Representatives, Mr. Andrew Uchendu has said that there is no
going back on commencing impeachment proceedings against President
Goodluck Jonathan if he fails to implement the 2012 budget when the
House resumes by September this year.
But an Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) member representing Idemili Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Chinwendu Odedo has disagreed with some of his colleagues in the National Assembly, especially ACN members, who are calling for the impeachment of the President.
Describing the call as unnecessary, the lawmaker noted that impeachment was mentioned by the Minority Leader, Chief Gbajabiamila, during a debate on the release of funds for the implementation of the 2012 Appropriation Law.
Odedo, who addressed journalists at his Nnobi country home yesterday during a poverty alleviation programme where he presented 10 vehicles, foodstuff, cash for barbing/hair-dressing salons, tailoring and farming/poultry to his constituents, said he believed the discomfort in the country was because Nigerians felt the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led Federal Government had not done well since 1999.
Among the communities whose citizens benefitted from the empowerment programme were Nkpor, Uke, Oraukwu, Eziowelle. Others were Abacha, Abatete and Umuoji. About 5,000 beneficiaries would participate in the existing phase of the programme.
Uchendu, who represents Ikwere /Emuoha Federal Constituency, decried the deplorable state of the East-West Road for which a contract was awarded since six years ago.
During a media parley with journalists in Port Harcourt yesterday, the lawmaker said he would join any group to protest against President Jonathan if no substantial work was done on the road by the next dry season.
His words: “If by the next season, no meaningful work is done on the East-West Road, I will join any group to protest against the presidency because my people are suffering, my people are very important to me.
“If there is any crime, the Niger Delta people have committed, the executive should tell us because there is no reason why the people of the region or anybody visiting the region should be subjected to this horrid experience. We cannot have access to our communities, villages and towns. Look at the number of lives we lost recently at the Okogbe fire incident due to the deplorable state of the East-West Road.”
He continued: “The distance that would have taken 20 minutes to cover now takes two hours and you want me to be happy. How can I be happy when my people are suffering? So I hold the executive responsible, they must do something and if they fail to do something tangible in the next dry season, we will protest.”
Uchendu, the chairman, Public Service Matters, regretted that the performance of the executive in budget implementation was disappointing and short of expectation.
